Institute for Functional Medicine (IFM) Partnership

In order to support more pharmacists in pursuing this training as well as establish pharmacists as an important provider in the field of functional medicine, FMPhA announced our new partnership with the Institute for Functional Medicine (IFM) in February 2021. As part of this new agreement, FMPhA Members can add on IFM Membership for only $175 per year through our Organizational Membership with them. Rather than pay $375 for IFM + $200 for FMPhA, you get all the benefits of both organizations for only $375, so your FMPhA Membership pays for itself! In addition to all the perks of FMPhA Membership, our Organizational Membership with IFM has even better discounts than the regular IFM Membership itself! Read on to learn more…

Have you been interested in expanding your knowledge in functional medicine but don’t know where to start?
IFM has long been regarded as the ‘gold standard’ in functional medicine education and training, and at FMPhA, we recommend that all pharmacists take AFMCP, whether you are brand new or have been practicing for a while. AFCMP provides a foundational understanding of functional medicine, as well as lists you in the Find a Practitioner Directory for IFM (as long as you maintain IFM Membership).
The Institute for Functional Medicine’s (IFM) foundational course, Applying Functional Medicine in Clinical Practice (AFMCP)  provides a new framework for designing effective, personalized treatments for every patient, in every care setting. AFMCP allows you expand your education in nutrition and how to approach patients in a more holistic way. Also, once you complete the course, you can advertise that you now have basic foundational knowledge in functional medicine. You will have a better understanding of how to approach a patient more holistically with many tools to really assist you in prescribing food plans, lifestyle recommendations, sleep hygiene, exercise prescription, and more in a more detailed way!
After completing AFMCP, IFM membership will qualify you to be listed on IFM’s web-based practitioner referral network, Find A Practitioner directory. Practitioners who complete the full IFMCP are listed at the top of the directory with a special IFM Certified Practitioner designation. More than 100,000 new patients looking for healthcare professionals trained in functional medicine access this referral network each month.
What is Applying Functional Medicine in Clinical Practice?
Many chronic diseases occur when fundamental lifestyle factors like diet, movement, rest, and/or sleep are lacking or mismatch with a patient’s genetic makeup. Applying Functional Medicine in Clinical Practice® (AFMCP) shows clinicians how to design effective, personalized treatments for every patient.
AFMCP integrates the latest medical research with a model of care that accounts for:
  • Patient’s individual history
  • Unique genetic makeup, and
  • Environmental and lifestyle factors
IFM encourages a multidisciplinary approach to patient care. We welcome a variety of licensed healthcare disciplines to AFMCP, including MDs, DOs, NDs, DCs, pharmacists, physician assistants, nursing professionals, and nutrition professionals.

Why AFMCP?
At AFMCP, expert educators provide case-based, interactive presentations using real-world situations to model the use of a suite of new clinical tools. These tools help clinicians to:
  • Make more personalized assessments
  • Design appropriate treatments to address each patient’s unique combination of history, genetics, and lifestyle
  • Guide patients through the sometimes difficult process of making sustainable lifestyle changes that lead to better outcomes
Integrating the simple strategies of modifiable lifestyle factors in a healthcare plan can help patients feel more empowered to take charge of their own health, thereby increasing overall health and well-being.
AFMCP Clinical Competencies Attendees will learn:
  • Established and emerging diagnostics, therapeutics, and prevention strategies
  • How to design nutritional and lifestyle interventions to improve patient compliance and outcomes
  • How to integrate appropriate assessment tools to diagnose, treat, and assess patient outcomes from a Functional Medicine approach
  • How to utilize innovative and practical assessment tools
  • Methods to establish a mutually empowering partnership between clinician and patient
  • The scientific basis for Functional Medicine principles and fundamental clinical imbalances
  • How to apply key elements of the Functional Medicine Model in clinical practice
